Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper adds a new approach to the study of victims’ discourse based on Herman and Chomsky’s original theorisation of worthy vs. unworthy victims. From a translation perspective, the paper investigates ideological intervention in media translations reporting on the victimhood of civilians. The study is based on a comparative analysis of English and Arabic media texts from international and national news outlets that have reported on various events during conflicts in the Middle East. The study argues that solidarity relations are a critical element that influence the text producer's/ translator's discourse, and can work at the expense of victim-oriented values.
