Abstract

The chapter examines the scope and significance of news translation, what is known about the translators, and the kinds of strategies employed as well as their rationale. The section on news translation into English looks at English translators of news including Abel Boyer (Post Boy), Roger L’Estrange (Intelligencer) and Daniel Defoe (Weekly Journal) and analyses the translation in Mercurius Politicus (1657) of news paragraphs from the Gazette de France. The chapter also has a section on the translation into French of English news in Gazette d’Amsterdam, Gazette de France and other French-language newspapers. The chapter includes a case study on the Gazette de Londres, the English government’s authorised translation of the London Gazette.
