Abstract In the translation of fiction it is necessary to take into account the interdependence of intra‐textual components. This is particularly important in the case of metaphors that function as a characterisation tool If translators fail to do this the target text characters may become mutants of those in the source text Should this happen, the translated novel as a literary work can be affected.
