Abstract

(article forthcoming) In this paper I will examine the stylistic and semantic strategies employed in the Ottoman translation of Alexander Dumas (père)’s novel Le comte de Monte-Cristo in order to adapt the original French version for a local Ottoman audience. In particular I will investigate the linguistic and cultural background of Theodor Kasap (Theodor Kasapis), the rum origin translator of Dumas’ novel, who was a very influential personality in the Istanbul cultural scene during the second half of the 19th century and founder of the Ottoman satirical journal Diyojen on which the Le comte de Monte-Cristo started appearing serialized.
