Abstract

This article argues, based on figure and ground theory and conceptual blending theory, that translating begins with source-text figure making and ends with target-text figure representation. The notion of figure originates in the translator's abstraction, idealisation and selection of personal and cultural readings. As a figure maker, the translator transforms figure in conceptual blending.
