Abstract

Abstract Background: Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC-O) is a rare subtype of ovarian carcinoma. It has been described as primary ovarian carcinoma with definite urothelial features without any benign or proliferative Brenner component. The biggest challenge is to distinguish this entity from a malignant Brenner tumor, and the metastases from transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCC-B). The immunohistochemistry (IHC) is of great help, as TCC-O has an IHC staining pattern very different from that of TCC-B, and is similar to other surface ovarian carcinomas, thus indicating that TCC-O arises from pluripotent surface epithelium of the ovary. Case: A 40-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging abdominal mass on the right side, of 1 year's duration. Abdominal ultrasound showed a homogenous solid cystic mass in right ovary. Preoperative CA-125 was markedly raised. The patient underwent a staging operation including total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-opherectomy (TAH-BSO),...
