Abstract

Electron excitations in ion-atom collisions are investigated by a combined perturbative and variational approach. Time-dependent variation theory is formulated for the Dirac Hamiltonian. Deviations from the variational mean field are taken into account. The energy spectrum of positrons emitted during a heavy-ion collision is calculated and compared with experiment.
