Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reveal transition of awareness of problems and policies for urban expansion in Toyama city. Since the 1960s, they had been concerned about the sprawling phenomenon, and proposed the implementation of planned land readjustment in the area adjacent to the existing urban area as a solution, but results were not efficient. On the other hand, they have long had a policy of ensuring the convenience of living in the ever-expanding urban area through transportation. It can be evaluated that the accumulation of such discussions became the basis of “Compact city” policy.
