Abstract

In the past few years, rapid green and self-sustainable industrial revolution has been influenced due stimuli responsive, smart and tunable biological system integration computer and Internet-driven intelligence techniques (machine learning algorithms, cloud computing, Internet of Things). However, this integration and transformation of the bio-manufacturing industry from 4.0 to 5.0 is challenging and complicated, which significantly depends on the predictive and progressive methods for industrial design, fabrication, production, quality assurance and marketing. This integration transformed industry 4.0–5.0 with imaginable power of harnessing and reshaping the living systems or their products in situ as well as ex-situ through novel, intelligence and engineered system manufacturing. The emerging techniques of genomics, synthetic biology, metabolomics engineering along with artificial intelligence methods, transformation and their progression methods, challenges and obstacles have been addressed in this chapter. Particularly, contributions of the drivers of transformations of industry 4.0–5.0 are focused on artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, bioengineering and biotechnology. Three progression methods are identified and highlighted based one cell-based bio-manufacturing, cell-free bio-manufacturing, digital bio-manufacturing. Challenges and issues with biotransformation yet to be addressed are manpower, optimization parameters, production and in-vitro metabolomics engineering. Synthetic to bio-intelligent synthetic systems addressed through bio-hybrid electronic devices, bioplastics, biosensors, novel pharmaceuticals, biomimetic and soft robotics, tissue engineering, biomass-based green energy system and bioreactors are key components for accelerated realization of new expertise and infrastructure for future bioproductions. Overall, this chapter provides a comprehensive understanding on the transition of the bio-manufacturing industry from 4.0 to 5.0 which will help in the development of a new generation of industrial revolution.
