Abstract

The light decay after interruption of a pulsed rf discharge was analyzed in the nitrogen first positive system as a function of nitrogen pressure and wavelength. Values for the natural lifetime of a number of vibronic levels of the B 3IIg state were deduced. The variation of the electronic transition moment over internuclear separation was investigated. The results were found to be dependent on the potential model assumed in the calculations of the Franck—Condon factors. A value of about 2×10−3 is proposed for the oscillator strength f0,0.
