Abstract

Flame spray pyrolysis process provides a cost effective way to make metal oxide powders. When the solvent is a green chemical, the process could become a sustainable manufacturing process for materials production. In this presentation, we will show that transition metal oxide powders can be produced in a flame spray process with a green solvent as the metal oxide precursor. It is also shown that complex transition metal oxide powders, such as Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3)O2 and Li(Ni0.8 Co0.15 Al0.05)O2, can be produced in this process. These powders can be controlled to a certain degree in terms of powder sizes and morphology, to make them suitable for use in Li-ion batteries. Detailed results of the powder synthesis, characterization, and battery testing will be presented.
