Transition in the Rural Population and Settlements

Abstract

AbstractTo optimise the development of rural transport, it is necessary to understand the patterns of rural population and rural settlements. This chapter makes a macro-evaluation of the scale, evolution and distribution of China’s rural population, as well as the type, distribution, infrastructure and spatial patterns of rural settlements. To meet the needs of the rural population in China, future rural transport enhancement should emphasise quality instead of quantity. At the same time, it is important to pay attention to the local conditions in different regions.
