Abstract

Alternating low-field susceptibility and steady-field magnetization measurements show the occurrence of mictomagnetism in Fe—Al alloys with either the [Fe 3Al] - or the [FeAl]-type atomic order over almost the entire composition range of these two phases. Fe 70Al 30 [Fe 3Al] becomes ferromagnetic on cooling below T c = 400 K, it becomes superparamagnetic on further cooling below the “reversed Curie temperature” T ɔ ≈ 170 K and it becomes mictomagnetic below the freezing temperature of T f = 92 K. Alloys Fe 70.5Al 29.5 to Fe 73Al 27 with [Fe 3Al] order transform directly from the ferromagnetic to the mictomagnetic state, without intermediate paramagnetism.
