Abstract
Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the major difficulties that Chinese marine fisheries have faced are declines of marine fishery resources; pressing environmental issues related to the fast development of an extensive aquaculture industry, combined with rapid urban and industrial development in the coastal areas; and unsustainable development and industrialization of fisheries in combination with low incomes for fishermen. This case study analyzes the economic problems of the marine fishery in Jin-shanzui fishing village, the oldest and last remaining fishing village in Shanghai. This chapter reveals experiences and lessons learned from Jin-shanzui that successfully transformed the traditional fishery into a recreational fishery. The study also presents the recovery of coastal fishery resources and income developments for fishermen. It concludes with an outlook on how the lessons learned from this fishing village can help guide the sustainable development of marine fisheries elsewhere.
