Abstract

Transit Centres (TCs) in urban areas are the locations where the Rapid Transit Network (rail and buses) and the Feeder Bus Network interconnect. The paper addresses TCs where bus schemes, envisaging either transfers between feeder and primary lines or bus convoying systems, are operated. The functions performed in TCs, with emphasis on bus service operation issues, and the procedures for the selection of candidate TC sites are presented. The criteria and methodology adopted to select locations for TCs are then discussed. The paper concludes with the results of a case study on TC location, that of Rome’s urban bus network.
