Abstract

A current regulator was built to reduce fluctuations in arc-heated flows and to maintain set values of arc current for long periods of time. Regulation is obtained with 145 transistors in a three-stage assembly that is operated in series with the arc and is designed for use at current levels up to 1000 A. Results are presented that show its operating characteristics, its effect on arc current oscillations, and the corresponding reduction of fluctuations in test section flow properties.
