Abstract

Considerable doubt has existed over whether or not a time-dependent three-dimensional analysis of building envelope components is required. A finite difference model which confers advantage in describing the thermal performance of multi-layered wall panels with or without window openings has been developed. Together with the model logic and procedure, classification of thermal nodes and the conductances between them are described. The model was found to be a valuable means of providing insights into the effect of edge shading, window recess and sideways heat exchange at windows' aperture four-sided surface and at the four-sided surface of the wall panel on the overall rate of heat transfer and net energy consumption. A case study is presented to experimentally validate the developed model.
