Abstract

Shadowgraph and photoelastic imaging techniques were used to visualize shock wave propagation and the resultant transient stress field in solids during shock wave lithotripsy (SWL). The highest stress concentration was found to be associated with the superposition of shear waves near the posterior surface of the solid, which suggests a new mechanism of shear-induced fragmentation during SWL.
