Abstract

The infusion of fructose to newborn pigs induced a rise in plasma insulin, accompanied by hypoglucosemia. This reaction was more pronounced in the pigs younger than 24 hr than in older ones. Quantitatively, the rise in plasma insulin and the fall in blood glucose were closely correlated. This suggests that the hypoglucosemia occurring in transient fructose intolerance in the newborn may be provoked by insulin. (Endocrinology86: 897, 1970)
