Abstract

The response of the outlet condensate flow in a double-pipe condenser to a sudden change in coolant flowrate has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The experiments with Freon-22 as working fluid revealed that, during the transient of changing the coolant flowrate, the condensing pressure and the inlet vapor flowrate were varying along with the response of the condensate flow. Incorporating the perturbed variables into a theoretical calculation using the two-phase two-fluid model gives a good agreement between the theory and experiment. Comparisons of the present results with predictions of previous analysis using void propagation equation indicate that the thermal capacitance of the tube wall and the resistances to heat transfer have significant effects on the response characteristics.
