Abstract

Abstract Measurements are reported of transient photoluminescence (PL), photoinduced optical absorption (PA) and photoconductivity (PC) for polymeric (amorphous) sulphur (a-S) and single crystal sulphur (c-S). Whereas PL is strong in a-S it is undetectable in c-S. The PA signal is large in c-S but varies in samples of a-S prepared at different fictive temperatures. This suggests that the PA signal is associated with the Ss ring, the only molecular species in the orthorhombic crystal, and that the PL originates from larger rings, chains or defects.
