Abstract

This article considers hysteresis in the core of a passive magnetic fault current limiter (PMFCL) by using Jiles Atherton (JA) hysteresis model. This approach makes the model more realistic. The equivalent circuit for transient analysis has been established and numerically solved using the JA hysteresis model for PMFCL current and voltage. A comparative performance analysis has been carried out between hysteresis and non-hysteresis models of the PMFCL. A prototype is fabricated and its performances are evaluated, which is observed to be in close agreement with the estimated results from hysteresis model. Always harmonic contribution of electromagnetic devices has been a very important issue in power system. In this work, the harmonic analysis of the proposed PMFCL model has been carried out using wavelet transform. At normal state, PMFCL does not produce any higher order harmonics, but at fault small amount of third and fifth order harmonics present with the fundamental.
