Abstract

A 10 MW class wind turbine synchronous generator that has the field and armature windings superconducting is presented. The field winding is assumed to be made of YBCO tapes while multifilament MgB2 wires are considered for the armature winding. The proposed design is analyzed using a finite element based on simulation tool MAXWELL 14.0. The transient electromagnetic field of the model is simulated. The electromagnetic field of the whole generator, stator windings, air gap and field windings are given out. The waveform of output voltage and current are given out too. The output power is calculated easily with higher accuracy based on transient analysis. The simulation results show that a higher output voltage, and hence higher power levels, can be achieved compared to the more common arrangement where the field winding is superconducting while the armature winding is made of copper.
