Abstract

A heterodyne technique of ion cyclotron resonance is described and shown to give spectra having the form of an exponentially damped sinusoidal curve. The rate of damping is related to the collision and charge-transfer rates in the ion–molecule system. The generalized ICR equations required to analyze the data are developed and solved and are shown to fit experimental spectra very closely. Results for N2+ in N2 agree well with mobility data and with ICR linewidth studies and indicate substantial probability for charge transfer. Results for CH4+ in CH4 are found to rule out any substantial charge-transfer cross section.
