Abstract
Three cases of transient femoral nerve block following ipsilateral groin surgery in children are presented. All three had received perioperative ilioinguinal nerve blocks using bupivacaine injected medial to the anterior superior iliac spine, which provided excellent analgesia but presumably were responsible for the transient femoral nerve impairment. During the 3-month period of study, this complication accounted for 12% of those in children aged 1–12 years undergoing groin surgery. Lower doses of bupivacaine may provide adequate analgesia for day-case surgery while reducing the incidence of this complication.
