Abstract

This paper presents the fundamental diffraction mechanism of electromagnetic (EM) scattering in time domain (TD) from perfect electrical conducting (PEC) surfaces based on the approximation of physical optics (PO). This work can be extended to treat dielectric bodies because the induced currents predicted by PO are determined by the reflection coefficients on the scattering bodies. In this work, the transient diffraction mechanism is developed based on the propagation of geometric ray tracing with equal propagation times via scattering from the surface. A simple geometric ray tracing mechanism to easily determine the contributing induced currents on the scattering surface is presented to demonstrate the diffraction mechanism.
