Abstract

The envelope of the sidebands of a CO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> laser digitally frequency modulated at a cavity resonance frequency has been studied. Both theory and experiment yield that rise time is determined by the photon lifetime in the optical resonator. Using a conventional CO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> laser, exponential transient behavior with rise times of some 50 ns has been observed.
