Abstract

—Transient scattering of plane electromagnetic waves from a lossy layered medium for TE polarization is studied. The frequency-domain reflection coefficient is expanded as an infinite series of multiple reflections, and the time response of each term in the series is found using an analytical inverse Fourier transform. This requires that the transient interfacial reflection coefficients be found, and the impulse response formulas thereby obtained are believed to be the most general forms available. The theoretical results are validated by comparison to both a numerical inverse Fourier transform and to direct time-domain measurements.
