Abstract

The effect of finite propagation speed on the total delay through and the transient response of an on-chip transmission line is investigated in the case of an RC line with an open-circuited far end. A model of signal propagation is proposed that enables one to estimate this effect at signal wavefront durations much less than the propagation time. Using analytical formulae derived from the model, the validity range is identified for solutions of telegrapher’s equations as applied to RC interconnections typical of submicrometer technologies.
