Abstract

The duration of light pulses generated by two mode-locking regimes of continuous wave dye lasers are compared under similar experimental conditions. Mode locking in a ring laser where the counter-propagating pulses from a transient grating in a thin absorber provide pulses shorter by a factor 4 than those from a Fabry-Perot laser without absorber grating.
