Abstract

Abstract Injections of testicular tissue in complete Freund's adjuvant produced allergic orchitis in mice that are 100% susceptible to experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), but not in mice that are 100% resistant to EAE. In susceptible mice only, the levels of transglutaminase increased in the liver prior to the development of orchitis, and markedly increased in the testes during aspermatogenesis and the appearance of histologic damage. The levels of transglutaminase were elevated in the brains of animals with experimental allergic orchitis and in the testes in animals with EAE, suggesting that these organs have an antigenic community.
