Abstract

AbstractThis chapter identifies the genetic issues relevant for risk assessment and sketches methodological strategies to address these issues and thereby identify all of the possible transgene products and relevant phenotypic modifications of the transgenic plant. It describes the main conclusions of a public sector scientist working group on the methodologies for the ecological risk assessment of transgenic crops with respect to transgene locus structure and expression. It includes a scientific strategy for characterizing expression and transgene locus structure that can be applied to new Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton events in development in Brazil, and to the assessment of the Bt cotton events currently available for use in Brazil.
