Abstract

Objectives: After cardiac surgery children often need red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. RBC transfusions generate an inflammatory response and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect and inflammatory response in children with RBC transfusion. We hypothesized that washing RBCs before transfusion would reduce the pro-inflammatory response.
