Abstract
A short history of the blood transfusion activities inSlovenia is given, starting with the hommage to Dr. JanezPlecnik, a contributor to the famous experiment of theABO blood groups discovery by Landsteiner in 1900. Theorganized blood transfusion services of Slovenia thatcelebrate the 60th anniversary in 2006 have been traditionallybased on a system of unpaid voluntary blood donationswhich resulted, supported by the Red Cross activities,in satisfactory blood supply outcomes. Due to theincreased quality and safety demands for blood products,the major changes and reorganization of the blood transfusionservice in Slovenia started in 1990s. In this review,the current situation of blood transfusion services as wellas of transfusion medicine in Slovenia is described. Detailsare given regarding the national legislation, publicperception, guidelines, quality systems, accreditation, riskmanagement, cost containment and control, hemovigilanceand contingency plans, followed by specific informationdealing with the national strategies for the managementof immunological risk and for prevention oftransmission of diseases by blood transfusion. Finally,the future development of the blood transfusion servicesof Slovenia is discussed, taking into account the circumstancesthat point into the direction of further centralizationof processing, quality management and national databases of blood donors and patients.
