Abstract

Excessive preoperative crossmatching can be limited with a maximum surgical blood order schedule (MSBOS). Physician compliance with MSBOS recommendations, however, may be poor. We incorporated the MSBOS into the hospital computer order entry system to ensure compliance. Compliance with the MSBOS was greater than 99%. The crossmatch-to-transfusion ratio was reduced from 5:1 toil resulting in $110,800 in reduced crossmatch charges. Blood bank workflow was improved. Physician compliance with an MSBOS is ensured with computer assistance.
