Abstract

Singapore was founded by Stamford Raffles in January 1819 and remained a British colony for 140 years until the attainment of self-government in June 1959. The People’s Action Party (PAP) won the May 1959 general election and has been in power for the last 35 years in Singapore, having been re-elected eight times (Quah 1991, pp. 385-9). Thus, apart from the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945) and the short rule of the Labour Front government (1955-1959), Singapore has been gov-erned by the British colonial government and the PAP government.
