Abstract

IL-1β, TNF-α and TGFβ1 are increased in peritoneal fluid samples from women with endometriosis. Invasion of ectopic endometrium into peritoneal mesothelium requires matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) for tissue remodeling. Menstruation is preceded by progesterone withdrawal, collagen degradation and matrix remodeling predominantly through induction MMPs and recruitment of invading neutrophils. Thus, elucidation of the mechanism underlying regulation of MMP gene expression in the endometrium will be helpful for understanding normal menstruation but also treatment of endometriosis.
