Abstract

Albania is a country with many unique characteristics. It is the last country in Europe to escape from the communist system and also still the poorest nation in Europe. The baggage of its tragic immediate past, especially the isolation of its people from free thought for almost 50 years, still influences people's thinking and behaviour. Generally speaking, the Albanian education system provides sound basic education. However, most older government and public enterprise managers were originally trained based on the communist political economy principles and ideologies. Thus, the technical, conceptual, and human dimensions of modern business still need development. Since 1992, a massive dose of modern business training and education has begun to transform the mentality of young entrepreneurs and management professionals. This paper presents the transformation efforts of Albanian business education in general and then focuses on several new joint initiatives of the University of Tirana and the University of Nebraska.
