Abstract

This research paper looks to analyze performative forms of allyship in anti-oppressive social movements, and their past and current engagement with historically oppressed communities such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, LGBTQ2IA+ folks, those who identify as women, etcetera. Using an analysis of both past and current events within these movements worldwide, this paper will discuss how performative allyship contributes to the exclusion and silencing of oppressed communities from their own movements. This paper seeks to draw attention to the importance of centering oppressed communities in anti-oppressive movements, and highlighting their knowledge and lived-experiences which are essential in realizing their common goals of land, food, climate, and economic justice worldwide.
