Abstract

DNA from streptomycin-resistant strains of Streptococcus sanguis, Strep. salivarius, Strep. mutans, Strep. milleri and Strep. mitior transformed Strep. sanguis strain Challis to streptomycin resistance. Competent strains were not detected among isolates of Strep. mutans and Strep. salivarius isolated from saliva samples of 50 subjects. Of 50 Strep. sanguis strains isolated from these subjects, 13 were competent for transformation to streptomycin resistance. Some of these competent strains were transformed when exposed to heterospecific DNA.
