Ponte - Apr 2021 - Volume 77 - Issue 4 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2021.4.7 Abstract:Transformation of higher education in South Africa cannot be accomplished as a separate entity because education is a dependent variable and does not operate in a vacuum. The purpose of this article is to explore the impact of the following social systems, demographic / environmental systems; socio-economic systems in higher education; science and technological systems; language as medium of facilitation, the role of the state in education and cultural diversities in higher education. This article concludes that these systems are relevant for advancement of higher education. If these systems are effectively used in higher education, the quality of education will be enhanced. This article further demostrated that each system entails that there is a transformation in higher education.
