Abstract

Defects of continuous-cast billet and their transformation at different stages of rail production are studied. It is found that, on many occasions. longitudinal surface cracks in the billet (of shrinkage or groove type) do not lead to the formation of surface defects on rails, whereas crystallization cracks accompanied by slag inclusions or closure of the metal may be transformed to rolling cracks or blisters on rolling.
