Abstract

New quenchable high pressure phases have been found for the Ba 2M 2+F 6 compounds (M 2+ = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg). They are isotypic with K 2GeF 6. The synthesis has been performed by subjecting a mixture of 2BaF 2 + MF 2 to 40 kbar and 800°C in a belt-type apparatus. The cation coordination is the same in the high pressure phase as in the low pressure one whereas the fluorine-baryum packing changes from cubic to hexagonal. The previously unknown compounds Ba 2MnF 6 and Ba 2MgF 6 with the normal-pressure structure have been synthesized at 10 kbar and 700°C.
