Abstract

The invention of paktong (白銅), literally “white copper”, was known in ancient China from at least the 4th century AD and is considered one of the most important inventions in the history of metallurgy, facilitating economic and material exchange in Europe during the 17-19th centuries. As recent investigations into the history of paktong show, it is generally recognised that the manufacturing of this metal had close associations with Southwest China. The acquisition of this metallurgical knowledge in Europe had very close relationship with Sweden and Austria. In this paper, the author will combine textual materials and field research findings to shed new light on the influence of paktong on 18-19th century Europe.
