Abstract

This case presentation demonstrates the importance of recognizing that patients can have both character pathology and affective disorders, shows the need to assess the impact of one illness upon the other, demonstrates the importance of having both medical and psychological viewpoints in attempting to manage such patients, and shows the pitfalls that can be encountered in working with such difficult cases. The paper offers speculations about the ways in which the biological and psychological aspects of affective disorder may be interrelated and the mechanisms of this interrelationship.
