Abstract

Our topic for this combined workshop is the transfer of technology in the poultry system. Extension is the educational arm of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Land Grant University (LGU) system and is the traditional mechanism to transfer technology to farmers. Adoption and adaptation of technology, particularly in the areas of nutrition, disease control, and genetics, have propelled the poultry industry from the lowly status of “women's pin money” to a highly concentrated, specialized multibillion dollar industry. The poultry industry thus satisfies society's demand for a wide variety of and dependable supply of safe, inexpensive food that is of consistently high quality.
