Abstract
ABSTRACTThe movement of scholarly journals between publishers has been an established feature of the scholarly publishing landscape for many years. Transfers of journals owned by third parties (mostly societies) have proven to be particularly problematic for librarians and end‐users: the most common problems are loss of online access, cancelled subscriptions, and most notably disappearing archives. The UK Serials Group therefore brought representatives from all stakeholders to the table in an attempt to address these problems. The TRANSFER Working Group developed a Code of Practice through an open, consensus‐driven process with participation by all interested stakeholders; a legal review was also a crucial step in the development process. The development and release of the TRANSFER Code of Practice is an example of the positive effects of industry collaboration. To date, more than 25 publishers have endorsed the Code and are ‘TRANSFER Compliant’.
