Abstract
Abstract Quality control is a vital component of data management. However, in the current data volume explosion, practising quality control with finite resources presents a very real problem. During 18 years of operation, the British Oceanographic Data Centre has developed a cost-effective quality control strategy. In this paper we describe the quality control procedures developed with emphasis on two vital components, the transfer system and SERPLO. The transfer system provides the initial interface between external data and the BODC system, combining reformatting with extensive data checking. SERPLO is a powerful, interactive, non-destructive graphical editor. It is shown how the internal development of these systems has dramatically increased the efficiency of the data management operation.
