Abstract

Since its establishment in 2001, the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) has been committed to various environmental issues from global to regional scales by conducting diverse solution-oriented research under the overarching question of how human-nature interaction and relations ought to be. RIHN has undertaken interdisciplinary research spanning the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. In recent years, has evolved toward transdisciplinary (TD) research that involves collaboration with various stakeholders in society. To effectively promote TD research, we established a new research structure by introducing a program particularly focusing on developing theories and methodologies for TD research, by collaborating with the research programs/projects within and outside of RIHN. We are also collaborating with the international platform “Future Earth”. As part of this, we are hosting Future Earth Asian Regional Center to strengthen interdisciplinary and TD collaboration and capacity building across the Asian countries. In this chapter, we summarize outputs and outcomes of the overall TD research of RIHN for the recent years, including development of methodologies, environmental traceability, Water-Energy-Food nexus issues, Sustainable Food Consumption and Production issues and early-career training course for TD research in Asia, and discuss/propose RIHN methods for TD research.
