Abstract

This volume of the<i>Drugs and the Pharmaceutical Sciences</i>series seeks to provide an organized and up-to-date source of information for investigators interested in the practical development of transdermal drug delivery systems. The text presents in 12 chapters a systematic overview of the research and development issues critical to the development of transdermal drug delivery systems as well as highlighting several points in which further research is needed. As a reference source and teaching text this volume is an excellent contribution to this field of research. The first two chapters of<i>Transdermal Drug Delivery</i>deal with fundamental background information relevant to an understanding of the skin as a barrier structure. A weakness of this volume is its approach to the skin as a pure barrier structure. However, this is an understandable fault given the text's emphasis and goals.
